Gina Mabasa: Gearing up for her show The 3rd Floor Experience

Afro-soul singer and songwriter Gina Mabasa will be doing a one woman show at the South African State Theatre (SAST), titled The 3rd Floor Experience. The show will be taking place on February 2023.

The show is in partnership with (SAST), and Gina Mabasa will be “reflecting on her journey to self-discovery, love for the arts, and navigating life as a young queer black woman in South Africa.”

Attendees of the show can look forward to being entertained by a live band, where she will be performing some of her old songs (the likes of Ntate Moholo), and of course the new songs, most notably Nyeleti.

About Gina Mabasa

“Gina Mabasa’s talent rose to fame in 2013 when she became part of team NorthWest in the SA Choirs Show, Clash of the Choirs, mentored by Hotstix Mabuse.

Gina worked on the Samsung S4 Launch with SA recording artists like RJ Benamin, Ayo Solanke, Neil and Itu Tshabane. She was also part of Idols season 9. She has also been casted in Marikana the Musical and HUNGRY; both plays by Mr. Aubrey Sekhabi.

She furthered her musical studies at Vusi Mahlasela Foundation, focusing on music theory and instrument (bass guitar). She was also casted in a play called AMANDLA the musical. At the 2016 FNB Arts Fair, she performed a piece at the 2017 play Xova and Mother and Child by Jose”

She started her professional music career at 21, and now at 30, she shared that her musical journey has not been an easy one.

“Being an independent artist is not easy, because you knock on doors that then get closed, and it makes you feel like you are not good enough,” she told Sunday World.

“I’ve always lived my life according to people’s standards. It didn’t just happen overnight, it was a journey to get to where I am. Acceptance was key.”

The late Sibongile Khumalo is one of the artists that she was inspired by. “I would have loved to work with mam’ Sibongile Khumalo,” she shared with Sunday World. Right now she is inspired by Msaki, Maleh, Thandiswa Mazwai and Sun EL Musician, just to name a few .

The Nyeleti singer, has shared a stage with some heavies in the music scene, the likes of Ami Faku, and says she would love to work with heavy weight Black Coffee one day.

Seeing Gina Mabasa Perform

I saw her perform for the first and only time at the You Belong Brutal Fruit Luncheon with Kelly Rowland, back in December 2022. The event was held at the Park Station in the Joburg CBD.

Ms Gina Mabasa was the main act for the day, and she serenaded the guests with her beautiful voice. In addition to her own music, she also performed beautiful oldies from some of Mzansi’s best artists, and I must say, it was an event filled with beautiful music, laughter and great vibes.

And now, you can see her perform on the 3rd of February 2023.
