DJ Maphorisa back in court on 05 July for Thuli Phongolo assault case

On Wednesday, 14 June, DJ Maphorisa, real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, made a brief appearance at the Randburg Magistrates Court regarding the gender-based violence case filed against him by his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is now expected to decide whether they will proceed with the assault case, as DJ Maphorisa’s girlfriend, has withdrawn the charges against him.

In a joint statement released after the incident became public last month, the couple confirmed that Thuli Phongolo decided to retract the charges she initially filed at the Sandton Police Station, but that does not automatically drop the case.

“The matter has received mixed public attention, causing a great deal of emotional stress on both parties involved.

It is on this basis that the parties have since elected to resolve this matter privately through their receptive management and legal teams. Consequently, Phongolo has since withdrawn the charges laid against Sekowe at the SAPS, Sandton Station.

Both parties have noted with concern, the disparaging, defamatory and (in some instances) untrue remarks, statements and reports emanating from the incident and view these in a serious light.

The parties reserve their rights to individually pursue legal action against persons making defamatory and. or false statements in relations to this matter.”

According to News24, the final determination of whether DJ Maphorisa will face charges rests with the NPA, despite Thuli P’s decision to withdraw her complaint.

Due to the surge in gender-based violence cases in South Africa, the NPA does not automatically accept withdrawal statements.

As a result, Thuli P will be required to present her justifications to the NPA for her desire to withdraw the charges.

The couple apparently got into an argument, as a result of a third person being present in their relationship. Allegedly, DJ Maphorisa found out that there was another guy in Thuli P’s life, something he didn’t like.

And everything deteriorated after that.
